Summer Vase Design

Summer Vase Design

When I visit my parents in France during the summer, one of my pleasures is to drive early in the morning to the flower market in Cannes and buy a basket of fresh flowers directly from the growers. Every time is a real adventure, not knowing what I will be finding.

On this trip, I found some amazing antique hydrangeas and green foxtail millet that definitely caught my eyes. I already had a tall vase design in mind to display these amazing blooms.

I like to design my bouquet in my hand so that I can define the shape I want create. Then I just use a twine to tied it, and cut all the stems in a sharp angle for the flower to hydrate properly. The advantage of having the bouquet tied versus loose flowers in a vase, is that you can change the water very often without messing the design. Clean daily water is what to my experience, is prolonging the life of these beauties.

I also like to insert large leaves inside the vase to conceal the stems. To my eyes, it helps unifying the design, bringing interest not only on the blooms but also on the vase itself. Any large leaves will work as long as they match the top part of the design: Ti, Hostas, Aspidistra, etc.
